Chapter Fifteen

After each of the alpha’s best trackers hurried down the hall to investigate the bathroom and pick up Magnus’ scent from there too, they scoured the house again but didn’t catch anything from the city pack’s missing member. With no new information, everyone filed out of Nina Williams’ ransacked double-wide. Johnny caught up to the shifter who’d found the wizard-blood scent on the knife and clapped a hand on the guy’s shoulder. “What’s your name?”

The man glanced at his hand and only answered when he removed it. “Steve.”

“Steve. Stay right here with that knife for a minute, huh?” He uttered a piercing whistle. “Boys! Get over here.”

The hounds bounded across Nina’s well-maintained yard with Boots trotting behind them. Luther sneezed and shook tiny purple flower petals off his nose. “Hey, Johnny. What’s up?”

“You guys found what you wanted, right?” Rex asked. His tail wagged happily as he gazed at his master but he stopped and lowered slowly when he saw the huge kitchen knife dusted with dried blood in the city shifter’s hand. “Johnny?”

“Go ahead and take a whiff of this, huh?” The dwarf nodded at Steve and gestured toward the hounds. “If you don’t mind.”

The shifter had to bend slightly to extend the blade toward the hounds’ snouts.

Rex and Luther both took five seconds to study it with their coonhound senses, then stepped away and stared at Johnny. “Nice knife, Johnny.”

“Yeah, real sharp.”

“What do y’all smell on there?”

“Uh…metal?”

“Yeah, and Wood Elf.”

“Hey, and shifter!” Luther’s mouth popped open and he panted in excitement. “Is that one of the missing ones, Johnny? Because shifter was the strongest—oh. Right. Shifter holding the knife.”

With a heavy sigh, Johnny glanced at Steve and raised an eyebrow. “You have some nose on you.”

“I know.” The shifter gave the hounds a wary look before he moved to join his alpha and their other best tracker in scouring the rest of the property for signs of their missing member.

“What was that about?” Luther asked.

“We do something wrong, Johnny?”

“Naw. Y’all did your jobs fine.” I can’t blame a hound when only one shifter picks up almost week-old wizard blood. “Keep lookin’ around. William!”

The city alpha turned slowly from the garden bed in front of the porch. “Dwarf.”

“Y’all got somethin’ of your lady shifter for my hounds?”

William’s second tracker went to their SUV and pulled a sweater out of the back seat. He approached Johnny and the hounds quietly and held Cassidy’s clothing item out for them to catch her scent.

Rex sniffed tentatively, then backed away and sneezed. “Yeesh. Never smelled a shifter wearing so much other crap on her. It’s all flowers and chemicals.”

The bounty hunter folded his arms. Lady shifters runnin’ around dousin’ themselves with perfume. That’s a new one.

Luther sniffed next, plunged his face into the sweater, and rooted around. The city shifter looked questioningly at Johnny and the dwarf shrugged.

“He’ll get it.”

“Ooh, Johnny. This is soft.”

The shifter snorted. “Cashmere.”

On the opposite side of the yard, Hyla straightened from where she’d bent over to search the hedges and muttered, “’Course it is.
